The Ultimate Guide to Solving an Escape Room

The Ultimate Guide to Solving an Escape Room

Whether it’s your first time trying an escape room or you’ve been around the block a few times, kudos to you for doing some preliminary research! We have the best strategies down to a science, so we’ve compiled an ultimate guide to solving escape rooms for you to take a few pro tips into the room with you.

How to Be an Escape Room Legend

  1. Come in with a clear head. While you can’t plan every move you make in an escape room – since the whole point is that you don’t know what’s ahead – you can have a loose game plan going into it. Take a few moments beforehand to clear your head so you can be focused and collected when you take on the escape room.
  2. Communicate clearly. Escape rooms are like a team sport, and a major tenant of any team sport is communication. If you aren’t working in tandem with the rest of your group, you’re making your life so much more difficult than it needs to be. Talk to your teammates, and your efficiency and likelihood of success will skyrocket.
  3. Split up the work. Again, escape rooms are a group effort. There’s a reason most facilities require at least two people in the room at once, and it’s because you can’t do it all on your own. Escape rooms are mentally taxing, and you’ll burn out very early on if you do everything on your own.
  4. Don’t take it too seriously. Escape rooms are meant to be enjoyed, so what’s the point of being too serious? When you have fun with it, your mind doesn’t get bogged down with the stress and pressure, and you’ll be able to maintain a calm and composed mindset.

What to Avoid in an Escape Room

As part of an ultimate guide, we have to remind you of the things you should avoid:

  1. Coming in with too many people. Having a big group of friends is great, and doing things with a big group can be fun. An escape room, however, is not one of those things. Too many people in a room can create unnecessary traffic and chaos. If you do want to bring in a group, there’s a numeric sweet spot that is optimal for solving an escape room.
  2. Fixating. Don’t waste all your time on one part of the room. Not only is it a huge time waster, but it can also a cause the previously mentioned “burn out.” Keep moving forward and be mindful of the timer so you’re aware of the time you have left in the room.
  3. Not coming back and trying again. If at first you don’t succeed, don’t throw in the towel and give up on escape rooms forever. The “ultimate” way to be good at anything is by practicing, and this is no exception. Plus, there’s a bunch of ways escape rooms help you grow and improve, so it’s a good hobby to pick up anyway.

The Reviews

  • review rating 5  Very considerate and nice staff and a great time! My group was placed with two other people randomly and they kind of took over the whole puzzle. The employees pulled us aside to let us know what they saw and they wanted to make sure we had a great experience of our own so they gave us a coupon to come back another time. They were really helpful from beginning to end and it was super fun!

review rating 5  We came here for my birthday with a group of 11. We did the flower shop escape room and had a wonderful time. The clues were great and challenging! Emilia was a wonderful host and it was a pleasure having her lead our group. We didn't escape, but had a great time. We were 1 clue away! I would definitely like to try another room at this location. It was creative and challen, but not impossible. Thanks for a great night!

  • review rating 5  Troy and Tommy Bohan with my son Paul Garcia-Lance and myself had the best of times trying to get out of the Egyptian tomb. We were seconds away but fell short of solving the mystery and we’re buried alive. Thank you so much for an enjoyable evening and a special shout out to Taylor and Sierra who moderated our adventure ! We have to return for our group picture and another great adventure!

review rating 5  Their flower shop was quite enjoyable, and Dana delivered with a lovely performance. Give her a raise 😁I've only done one room, but it was a great time. It was a bit challenging, yet did not feel too difficult for all levels of problem solving.

review rating 5  My fiancee and I were vacationing in Denver and tried out the Egyptian Tomb with another group of 4. We escaped with 5 minutes to spare! Very good room layout and good props. Puzzles were challenging and rewarding once solved. I was not a huge fan of how they did the hints... usually you have 3 hints or whatever and you ask for a hint when you get stuck, instead they give you hints when they think you need it. Otherwise, our game master, Trace, was very helpful and personable. Overall, very satisfied with our experience!

  • review rating 5  Had a great work team retreat activity here. Loved the puzzles and escaping the "flower shop" (aka: 1920s speakeasy). I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a team building exercise or just wanting to have fun.

  • review rating 5  We completed a team event here where we split into teams and competed to finish first. Both rooms had amazing puzzles and it was really fun. I think our company team thoroughly enjoyed both rooms. We completed The Egyptian Tomb and the Casino but one of our members in the casino team can't seem to stop mumbling numbers and math equations.

review rating 5  Emilia was fun, helpful and friendly. My husband and I were joined by a family to attempt an escape out of the Egyptian Tomb and unfortunately failed {if only we had 2 more minutes and we would have escaped!} but had a fun time and would definitely recommend!

review rating 5  Emilia did a great job explaining the rules. Wow! What an experience! We did the outbreak room. It was super similar to my childhood growing up! However, this time I was able to leave the room after an hour. What a relief! Anyway, I had a lot of fun and won't be testifying against anyone at this place in the future. Five stars!

  • review rating 5  EscapeWorks Denver was an amazing experience! We did a team outing for 2 large groups with our sales team and everyone came out so impressed. I had never done one but many in our group have, they all were at the conclusion that this was the best they have done so far! Great team building experience and very cost effective if on a budget. Savannah was awesome along with the staff that helped with our experience!

review rating 5  We had a blast! We originally did the Casino Heist, however, there were some complications with the room. Dice and Emilia provided us with wonderful customer service and had us do Outbreak instead. We appreciated how much they cared about experience and we ended up having a great time.
